A long time ago, back in the early 1970's I undertook a survey of the College when I was an Architectural Student, together with the Fire Brigades Fire Safety officer for the area. It was a week or so of a job, but the best part was the Elevenses, Lunch and Afternoon tea provided for us by the kitchens there......should have dragged it out all summer, but I'd have put on about 2stone by the time it was finished. From memory the cellars were absolutely packed with artifices ranging from whom rooms full of "guzzunders" (p**s pots to those under a certain age), glass cabinets full of stuffed birds and animals, together with enough antique furniture to fill a whole season of "Flog Its" on TV
I taught there in the late 1970's ,much of the stuff was sold to pay for various upgrades and upkeep of the College. Though even outside of the Museum the everyday furniture was valuable. I would love to have taken the contents of my study with me when I left but the desk probably wouldn't have fitted into a modern house. There was also valuable paintings lining the corridors. If I hated it, it was usually worth a fortune. The O'Byrne Collection was a gift of the Architect I believe. There was a colleague there, an O'Byrne, He always said it was his inheritance that kept the College going. Mind you he was nuts, still is, but his wife still loves him so he claims!
