Still taken from a home video showing kids loading up wood to make a bonfire on Whitledge Green, Ashton, Bonfire Night 1990. On the left-hand side is now (sadly) a car park. We used to spend many happy hours in the long grass (as we called it), playing hide and seek, building dens and letting our imagination run wild. Kids have nowhere to go these day, stuck in playing stupid violent XBox games. In the background, the old Cansfield School can be seen, albeit in a derelict state. The old huts had been pulled down by then I think.

There is still a bonfire on Whitledge Green every year but not has big as they used to be

Looking at the mess on the Green and in the background no wonder the council don't let anyone put anything on the Green until a few days before bonfire night

this year for the 1st time in 45yrs there was NO bonfire on the green
