Does anyone remember a night watchman, his name was OZZIE, worked there in the 80's. Had a little portacabin at the entrance. Lived on the main road Bolton Rd near the shops I think it was Bamfurlong.

Dave. I can only remember Harvey's Bakery, when it was situated at the corner of Manley Street, Lower Ince. When they moved, it became Hanson's Dairy. I didn't realize that it was New Springs, where Harvey's had moved to.

Anyone remembers "Harvey's red seal bread" logo.

Worked for Harvey's as a van lad for a couple of years when I left school in 1969. The bakery was along Cale Lane. I think next door was Lowthers and behind was Halls bakery.

Having analysed the comments made, and noted the date the photograph was taken, New Springs must always have been the main bakery, and the one in Lower Ince, a type of depot. What did the Harvey's Bakery in New Springs become? or is it still a bakery?

Worked at Harveys in the office from 1980/81 always at Cale Lane, met my 'van lad' of 29 years there, happy days! My dad was a supervisor there too

In the 40's Harveys bakery was in Manley St Lower Ince. Halls bakery was in Walkden Av andalong with Rathbones these were the 3 leading Wigan breadmakers. As to the wrappers and slicing; there was no such a thing. Lowthers was a separate bakers with a logo of " A1 Eccles cakes"

No, Garry. Never saw any news bulletins, relating to British bakeries, must have been loafing about in another part of the house. Is that the M.D.'s Rover, parked outside?

I remember when I started a large sliced loaf,( one and three quarter lbs ) was one and tuppence . I was on 'round 14' that delivered to St Helens, the driver was Alan Pomfret,he lived at Bryn and I think his parents had a shop at Scholes. One day a week with another driver I went to a bakery in Darwen to collect Hovis loaves. The first and most enjoyable job I've had. (Harvey's that is, not going to Darwen).

My great uncle Jack Harvey was, I believe, the one-time owner of Harvey's Bread. I'd appreciate any information about the bakery's location as I will visit Wigan in February 2014. Thanks.

Hi Kenneth, Jack was my great, great uncle. I visited Wigan about 6 years ago and I drove around to look at all the old houses the family had lived in. I also went see the bakery site on Cale Lane. The buildings are all still there and being used but obviously it isn't Harvey's anymore!

My uncle John, John Fearnley was, I believe, a manager at Harveys. My grandma, Nellie Alker, worked there part-time., even though she was in her 70,s. She appeared in the Harveys advert on tv,. ITS THE VERY BEST, was grandmas line. Two lovely people.

John Harvey bought the bakery from my grandfather, William Lowther in 1955. The building was owned by my G.Grandfather William and built in the early 30's by Fred Swift, It was operated under Lowther's A1 Eccles Cakes. John Harvey as a boy worked for William senior who died in 1946. The business was then run by his son William junior and Robert (Bob) Leech, my Father Gordon Selby was manager. John bought the business supposedly for his son. My Father did not get on with the new owner, so left and went to New Zealand. If anybody would like more info. on the Lowthers, email me.

Started working their 1960 as a loader left 1980 as a Despatch manager to move to South Africa loved every moment lovely town lovely people

I worked for both companies. Joined Lowthers in 1969 as a salesman. Norman Braddock , John Fearnleys brother worked there. Joined Harvey's in 1978 and my round was in Billinge and Skelmersdale. Had many good friends in the sales force and totally loved my time there until ?

I started work at Harveys as a van boy in 1965 my driver was Len Dawson nice man 13 years of fond memories.

My father Basil Tierney worked for Lowther Eccles cakes in the 1960's. Does anyone remember him? Jam tarts, cakes etc. Wonderful.

Worked there 67 68 on old plant Jack Flash and Harold Balfour were chargehands good days and nights

ozzie used to walk it to and from work he worked in the confecction at first a thin man with pointed face, i was van lad till made redundant in 1980 i was on hindley run first with len dawson then on sotton steel works 17 canteens with driver robert hart from liverpool bakery when it closed my van on hindley was a leyland fg reg number NDK 518R and my van on shotton was a ford d1000 custom cab regMLV 52R i used to get up at 3.30am and back for dinner.my wage was £48 pounds taking home and i got £200 pounds redundancy money when all the van lads were sold out by there drivers for a £1000 each ahh the human greed.

Fond memories from 1967/68 if there is any guys who worked there around that time particularly on old plant and fancy a Wetherspoon's don't essitate to get in touch

Barbara Marion Clare worked in a back office at Harvey's in the mid-1970s. Some of the other girls at Harvey's stripped her completely naked and tied her to an office chair on her 21st birthday. She put up a heck of a struggle, but to no avail...

She lived at Coppull Moor and, unusually for a girl in those days, rode a Triumph 350cc bike.

I worked for Central Wireless company in Standishgate in early early 1960’s and often went to repair the TV at Mr. Harvey’s house in either Brock Mill Lane or Leyland Mill lane (can’t tecall exactly) Mr. Harvey always kept a big box of Eccles Cakes in his conservatory. He invariably gave me a couple of packets before I left with the memorable words “Don’t forget Lowthers’ motto lad. Waerm um a bit” He was proud as punch of those Eccles cakes

I remember Harveys, I was a van lad Champion bakery Stockport, we used to see their vans all over Manchester in the early 70s

Got alot of memories with that bakery worked there many years before having motorbike accident in whelley My dad's uncle started on pony and trap in lower ince we all ended up working at bakery in New springs
