Progress can really destroy the beauty of old buildings and surroundings......:-(
Top photo much better. We spoil our country side for building that we can't afford.
Wasn't there a lot more trees and an old farmhouse on there at one time, this was before it became a transport yard, I can remember going there when I was young and looking at Owls in the trees and there seemed to be a lot more trees then than what's on the photo.
Yes Cyril, there were a lot more trees, and there was a stone wall before the fence.
that old barn would be facing you coming out of h.j hienz
To the left of the photo, just further back up the road, was the entrance to Jaggers farm. It had large stone gateposts , the huge pyramid shaped tops of which lay on the floor, either side of the entrance.
As kids we were terrified of him. The whole place was shrouded in huge leafy trees. It was a lovely area to grow up in, nothing but fields for miles all around.Whenever I think of it its Summer and I can hear bees and planes overhead.
Dave Oy and Mick, thank you for the links to Porters Wood... have tried to follow them but unsucessful!
Regards
Tricia
PS on my list of places to go next time!!
This was the site of the old B.R.S.Depot.Who did a lot of work out of Heinz.
It was a transport depot run by British Road Services I worked there for a while, a good firm to work for any more BRS drivers out there,
Actually, it's spelled Vanbrugh Grove. We have lived here for almost 19 years.
I agree, why can't they leave things alone. There are just far too many houses being built, and Wigan is becoming more and more overpopulated by the year and in idylic and more desirable areas, which is spoiling those places. Who can afford them? very few. My auntie and uncle used to live across from there in the 70s and 80s at Roper House (which backs onto Heinz's). During the sixties (before they bought the house), there used to be a blue TVR Grantura (early MK1 model I believe) that was parked outside. Anyone remember this?
