For a while now I've been dithering about whether or not I should post this photo of a painting I did years ago, taken from a photo from 2001.
I know it's not brilliant but it means a lot to me. It was on a walk along the canal bank near Appley Bridge with my dog Meggie when these two swans came along and I thought I'd take a photo and later decided to paint it.

I love the colours and composition Margaret, what paint did you use watercolour, gouache, oils?

Comment by: John on 8th February 2013 at 13:28

It's a beautiful painting Margaret. Well done. Just getting into painting myself, but I've a ways to go before I'm as good as you.

Margaret, that's one beautiful painting, I would be proud to hang it on my wall. You are one talented lady.

Comment by: Margaret Wall on 8th February 2013 at 18:14

Thank you very much for all the lovely comments.
I used to go for oil painting lessons to a lady in Penwortham but I haven't painted now for many years.
Tricia, this is the only one I ever did of Meggie but I did paint one of my other Golden Retriever Henry and may upload this some time.
Mark, this is a copy of an original painting I did in oils. I had a few copies made, one of which hangs on my wall and the original I gave to my brother in Torquay.
Maureen, as mentioned above, I also painted one of Henry but I didn't tell you because I'm afraid it's nowhere near as good as yours!
So thanks again everyone-you've boosted my confidence no end and made me think I might just resume my painting, although these days I'm more interested in photography.

Margaret.. don't underestimate yourself ever..that painting is really beautiful..I do wish you'd shown me your painting of Henry..and I hope you put him on here..I have never tried watercolours..and bet I can't do as well as you..that's not patronising talk, when I first saw your painting this A.M. I just thought how beautiful it was..please put your painting of Henry on,I think we would all love to see it.

Margaret..I have just reread your comments in answer to oils or watercolours,it looks like a watercolour,if it is, as I said I would love to try and paint in that medium..you're very talented Margaret, and I must tell you viewers that Margaret wrote a beautiful poem about Henry, would you put that on as well please.

Dear Margaret I have an England album going on my iPad, I would be very honoured if you would let me take a copy of your lovely picture to add to my album.....:-)

Lizzie you are definately most welcome to take a copy of my painting and I am delighted that you like it so much. Meggie died last May aged 14 years. In this painting she was very young and hadn't fully developed her lovely Golden Retriever coat.
Maureen I will reply to you in the morning as I'm off to my bed now. That sounds awful doesn't it?! Please don't take it the wrong way. It's just that I'm dropping asleep as I'm typing.x

Great painting Margaret - love it. I recognised it straight away, there is a bench there now.

Comment by: Margaret Wall on 9th February 2013 at 13:31

Hello again Maureen. In reply to your comments from yesterday, yes the painting does appear to be in watercolour but it was done in oils. This is because this is not the original painting but merely one of a few copies I had done at the time. In actual fact I prefer the copies to the original, which is at my late brother's home in Torquay.
I have tried painting in watercolour and I think it's a fabulous medium if you are more accomplished than I am but it is very difficult to hide any mistakes, whereas oils can cover up a multitude of sins!
But thank you very much Maureen and everyone else for your lovely comments.
