Wheatsheaf site following demolition
Wheatsheaf site following demolition

This photo was taken post 1985, after the demolition of The Wheatsheaf Hotel and Almond's Brewery. The fields in the background are now built on; the gable end on the right edge of the photo is Joe Hunter's shop.
The supermarket which emerged was firstly Gateway, which became Somerfield and now Co-op.

Dougie is the gable end not the old trustees bank building?

Look closely at the next photo(Joe Hunters) and on the extreme left you can just see a crane assisting with the demolition of the Wheatsheaf and Brewery. This supports my assertion that the gable end seen here is in fact that of Joe Hunter's shop!!
Moreover, the Wigan Directory for 1953 gives the following addresses for Prseton Rd: 2 Wheatsheaf; 4-6 Hunter J; 8 Kirkham William; 28 Rudd E.L. Registrar; 28a Wigan TSB; 30 Cookson J.; 32 Radio Wire broadcasting Co.

I remember the Weatsheaf pub as one we'd go into only occasionally, usually when on a pub crwal and the 'Dog' was the next port of call. A lot of the older fella's had a lot of good things to say about the place, especially about the Landlord, if my memory serves me, a certain Ritchie John's !!

The gable end is definately not Joe Hunters. Hunters had gone the way of the Wheatsheaf by this time, as I think the telegraph pole at the immediate right of this photo was to the left of Joe's shop as you looked at it from Preston Road. The bus stop was just further down, just out of shot. Brilliant photos by the way.

Keith, i have been and looked at the building that is still there and of the three vents on the gable end two are still visible, one is blocked up one is a more modern one and the other i presume is hidden under an advertising board. So i would suggest the building in the photo is the one that,s there now, the old TSB building.

The final nail in the proverbial coffin Keith, this building although it cant be seen on the photo has a chimney stack on the front of the roof near the guttering. Hunters had a chimney stack on its apex.
