No one can remember the last pail of drinking water obtained from the step-down well as it closed for that purpose about 120 years ago following the arrival of fresh piped water from the hills to the east on 5th October 1892. The redundant site was surrounded by these decorated iron railingss set in a stone kerbing.
The cheeky chappie in the photo has his feet in the stocks!! When did they move to their present position?

Never seen this photo before Keith, a very different view of the Market Square with the stocks in that position. I and many more will remember the step down well with just the kerb and the remains of the ralings in the kerb, which probably had been taken for the war effort, like many other railings countrywide.
