An unusual view of the Market Place! The gable end on the right is of No1 Cross St(the first house in Cross St is now No5) and the 3 storey houses on the left are of course 'spite row'. The properties directly behind the Cross are on what is now St Wilfrid's car park. The 1881 census lists one of them as being Church Gate House and occupied by the 'curate of Standish'.

A good pre 1929 view of the Market Place, Spite Row, and Church St. Spite Row seemed to be doing what it was built for and that was to hide the church. This is one for you Art!!

Just to clarify, the gable end at the right of the picture is actually number 2, Church Street, not Cross Street. There were three houses and two cottages before the current first house in Church Street, number 12. My recollection is that the first house was quite small, then two three-storey houses and then the cottages.

Wooden railings appear in later pics - I have one with no railings from 1911 - so this from the same period.
