Between Wigan and Preston, there is a series of these cast-iron mileposts dated 1837(the year Queen Victoria came to the throne). They were made by the Haigh Foundry and installed by the Wigan & Preston (South of the Yarrow) Turnpike Trust, which was authorised as a result of the Turnpike Act of 1727, to take over the road and extract tolls from all users, provided they kept the road in good repair.

If this great monument is outside the Boar's Head that I know then it's the pub my mum and dad went to for their evening out. I presume it is in Standish? Cheers Keith!!!

Not any more. This monument was stolen ( possibly for scrap ) during the first Covid lockdown.
