Tom Whalley's macaw must have longed for South America!
That barber's pole!!! I remember bout 1968 my mother dragging me to have my hair cut there. I was sheared!!! He put grease on my hair!!!! All this because Ted Spencer's was shut!!! Anyone remember him?
I used to get my hair cut at Ted Spencer's in the Commercial yard until I moved to Standish. Also went into the pub opposite , Walkers Ales, called The Commercial, saturday nights before going to The Empress Ballroom, later The Casino.Bill Blackledge was the band leader, he was in my class at the Tech evening classes in Engineering.
My boyfriend Peter, now my husband, worked in Commercial Yard as a young lad, Alan, in Sawbridge's Butchers in the late 1960s, and I remember going into Latimer's down there to buy yeast for cookery at school. Sorry we've gone from The Wiend to Commercial Yard, everyone, but one memory sparks off another....that's the magic of Wigan World.
The barbers shop in the Weind was owned by George Halton who lived in Newburgh
