this building replaced Thuts
This would be about 1959.It certainly looks in a sorry dilapidated state these days.
Thuts? Please explain, Gerry.
I worked here in 1967 with my friend Pat Cunliffe.
Michael this post on another photo in the album should explain.

When my dad had to go to this tax office he called it "THUTS"
for none wiganese speakers that meant "The Huts" long before this new building there were some wooden ones.
I used to work here as well.... a conversation stopper at parties unfortunately!
I'd love to know what sort of buildings these huts were and what their purpose was. Anyone?
I believe that the huts where on the corner of Mesnes St and New Market St and they where temporary buildings used by the Ministry of National Insurance.
Put this into your browser, The original place where "Th'Uts" were..

The photo you've posted, Art, is of a building on the corner of Mesnes St and New Market St. The building in the photo above, the Inland Revenue offices, is in Bridgeman Terrace. I'd still like to know what was there before this building was erected.
Michael, for a s long as I can remember (and that is a long time) there was nothing there before this Inland Revenue building was erected. It was just a piece of spare land.
Slightly off topic, but of interest to the Jacobite fans... (and me!) Bonnie Prince Charlie was supposed to have dined ... or stayed ,in one of the houses on Bridgeman Terrace. At one time it ws also said that he hid in the Tower of the Parish Church. We were supposed to go up the Tower on a trip there in our last year at school but were very disappointed that it was called off at the last minute. So please, if any of the elders or officials are reading this.... may I please go up the tower on my next visit home??????? :o)
Michael, that building is at the bottom of Upper Dicconson St/Mesnes St, the original green & cream Huts, a long single story wooden shed (in the 40's)The next building along going up towards the Park Gates was Mabs Cross Motors, Main Vauxhall dealers & stores, just before Wrightington St
