Woolies building used to be a pub long ago, and I think the crest is to do with the name of the pub, but I can't remember the name of it.
As it was the Royal Hotel, would it be the Royal Coat of Arms?
The Royal Hotel stood on this site ,there is a photograph on Wigan world
(Standishgate, first page ). I had always thought Woolworths had taken the old hotel and adapted it ,however on looking at the old photograph of the Royal and later ones of Woolworths ,the edifices are completely different .
Dose any know if there was a complete rebuild or just new exterior . Incidentaly I believe The Royal was previously The Eagle and Child
Woollies had about 4 doors down that side...I remember 2 of em being in use
I was always of the impression that the Eagle and Child Were further down after Woolworth and was a different building all together, I found this in an article for 1825

Yes, I remember Woolies' side doors in Station Road; I remember going in that way after coming out of The Ritz.
Right on that spot was the Friday and Saturday night burger and hot dog truck in the 70s. I can´t recall any takeaway food shops in the town centre at that time
I remember the hot-dog stands; I think the people selling the hot-dogs used to be picked up about 1am.....I wouldn't like to think of how it would be for them in Wigan Town Centre these days......no mobiles if there was trouble. Doesn't bear thinking about!
I imagine that doorway is still there hidden behind the wall in the main entrance to the Grand Arcade.
