Is this the building where the printing workshop Sidebottoms was ?
My brother also remembers going to the printshop offices with my Grandpa Bryson when he was handing in his piece for The Science & Art of Mining, a weekly/monthly mag. He says on one occasion they, the printers, did Ian's name in type printing metal, this was in about 1945/46. He remembers that before you got to The Wiend, from the Standishgate end there was a book shop & Dunns hat shop. Opposite near the Makinson Arcade there was a very good hardware/tool shop that sometimes had paintings in the window done by the proprietor.
These were known as "the houses" and were used mainly as storage. The main print works were behind and to the left of these as we look. The offices were on the front to the left of the houses past an alley that led down beyond gates to the main works. Note the dummy middle window on the first floor. All the rest gone now.
Remember Lets Wine Bar opening around 1980/81, something of a novelty in Wigan in those days. Seem to recall that they did not serve pints in the main bar and one of my mates was fairly miffed about it!
