Spent a lot of time in here when I was a kid.People used to call it the little lads ale house ,as you could buy a 5 penny pint, not sure what he put in it but it tasted good,When things got a bit rowdy he would appear out the back a give us all a good lecture.

I also remember going in Dicky Balls John. I Think the drink you referred to was a pint of horehound, other drinks were sarsaparilla, dandelion and burdock and many more. You are quite right we were thrown out for being rowdy more than once.Happy Days!

Ther was a similiar place in Scholes, can't remember the name. But should that be Dickie Ball?

During rationing time, we kids could get certin things in there that were sweet, but not rationed. The only one I remember is Liquorice sticks. You chewed on them & then spat out the "stuff". I hated them.

Wasn't there one at Ince Bar in the parade of shops opposite Smithy Green?

Yes there was; it was Tom Whalley's, but he went on to open Whalley's Pet Shop in Wigan; the temperance bar then became Lucas's.

A great photo: thanks. Nice memories of glasses of Vimto with my friend Hazel in the wood-panelled temperance bar, which seemed very posh at the time. Seem to recall bentwood chairs and marble-topped tables. Am I right? Sometimes we had one glass between two when we couldn't both afford the sixpence. Also have fond memories of Dickie Ball's "penny tray" containing sweets such as sherbet flying saucers. Now I wonder if we were nuisances as we spent so little, but Dickie Ball was always patient (resigned?) as I recall.
