What number in Warrington Lane was the Royal George and does anyone know where I can find a list of owners and lodgers?
My Great Uncle born in 1908 who worked for the Wigan Fire Service used to talk about the 'penny line' in the Royal George - where a rope was strung across the room and a tramp could lean on it for 1d. Sounds bizarre.
I was told about the line at the George.
In the morning when all the "guest" were asleep on the line and it was "getting up time",no alarm calls in those days, they untied the line at one end and all the guests fell down on the floor!!!
Hi - my Grandad(Bill Lees b.1900) used to run the Royal George up until it closed I think...My Dad, John (now 83) used to help out with his brothers and sisters. He has many tales, funny and sad from that era...let me know if you are interested and I will get some info...he probably has more photos too.
...and by the way (note to Carol from 2007) I am sure he has a number of books in his loft which records lodgers names (for those that could write!).
At Labour Exchange residents gave address of Royal George as 1Hardybutts Wigan
yes Jeanette, it was on the corner of Warrington Lane and Hardybutts. The houses on the left were in Warrington Lane.
