I remember the fair from Ashton-in M. marketplace as a lad in the early 1970's. It came in spring and again in autumn - always exciting to see the big trucks rolling down Wigan Road.

I remember a Waltzer like this used to be at Wigan Fair. The fair was held on the cobbled car park next to the Market Hall. There was a ride called the Caterpillar as well, a big yellow cover used to come over the top & there you'd be, going round & round in the pitch black dark ! Great memories of Wigan Fair.

Herbie Silcock used to have a great big Maroon caravan. he once shouted to me when I was playing around the fairground on a day when it was closed... Oy! he said come here, as I went to him, he was leaning out of the caravan door wearing a bowler hat. he asked if I would get him 20 Stirling from the newspaper shop on Ince bar. when I got back to his caravan to give him the change he thanked me and gave me a wad of free tickets for the rides....a grand chap.. Is he the one buried in Hindley Cemetary?

I recall visiting the fair in Wigan when I was at the Grammar School. It must have been 1946-7 when it came back after the war. We were stood on the steps of the waltzer and one poor chap on the ride was really ill. Every time the car spun, he threw up.That put me off fair ground rides for life!!
