an A j Evans postcard from around 1920 looking along liverpool rd back towards ashton, would the mill chimney in the background be on the record mill?

I think the building on the right is now Ashwood Nursing Home, formerly a school judging by the inscription on the stonework?
Would be interested to know

Is it my eyes or does the pavement on the left hand side continue unbroken past where Bryn St should be.Anybody any idea when bryn st appeared Save me looking it up.

It’s your eyes Frank.

Bryn Street has been there a long time. My grandfathers house No 37 was built 1890’s.

I’ve seen a photograph of the bottom end of Bryn Street showing the building of Evans School, again 1890’s, the land below where the Palace was built was open land then.

I've got an ordnance survey map 1849 and Bryn St is not on it but its on an 1891 map ???????

I think you’ve answered your own question Frank.
The Palace (cinema) was built 1910, ten years before this photo. Bryn Street was owned by Lord Gerrard, as was most of central Ashton. My grandfather paid rent to the Gerrard estate, the houses in that row were offered for sale to the tenants in the late 30’s. He declined the offer but soon after my parents got married they purchased the house (1950). Ground rent remained payable to the Gerrard estate, as far as I know it still is.

Hi kenee, with not being able to see Bryn St it made me think that the postcard was a lot older than stated ???

Frank do you know where I can purchase an Ordnance Survey Map of 1849 ? You mention that you have got one. I have the 1908 OS map which I purchased in reprint from the internet. However I cannot find where to purchase the 1849 one. Can you please advise ? Thank you Karin.
