Walked up Millers Lane many times.
I lived in Vicarage Close that was built later on where the Vicarage once stood. I can remember that building on the left... was it a carpenters shop, or a woodyard?
Lily Rickets, who had the chipshop on Walthew Lane at the
corner of Platt street(I think),used to peel and chip her potatoes in one of the buildings on the left.
Good chippy--she always gave big servings.
yes mr brooks wood work shop on left.wall on right still there
(Derek in Aus) Ricketts chipshop, was at the other end of the row. The shop you are thinking about was a newsagents, opposite the Westminster bank buildings. Opposite the bank was Foster's watch repair shop on the corner of Elm St, and on the other side was a butchers shop, later a dry cleaners and then later still washing machine repairs (Poole's original shop).
The last comment is totally wrong. The building you can see to the left of the pix was the Bakehouse. On the right wzs the vicarage. The boys are almost standing to the right of no. 20 Millers Lane, next door to that is 22 where I was born. The Chip shop was right at the end of Millers Lane at the corner of Millers Lane & Warrington road. I should know, I went there often enough.
Maggie, thanks for confirming what I had written, if you read Derek's comment, you'll see what I mean. He refers to the chipshop being at the end of Platt Street.
Newsagents on Walthew Lane and at the corner of Platt Street was called Tomlinsons. May Ricketts did the best chips and fish ever, practice was to take your basin wrapped in a tea towel to get your cooked food and take it home wrapped up to stop it getting cold before you reached home.
My Dad and his family lived at 10 Victoria Road, (nee Walls) there was Marian, Ken, Margaret and Chris. He has told me about John Bolans Bakery and this picture brought it all back. Thanks
That brings back memories Rickits chippy me mum used send me with big bowl tell me 6/d a chips n 2 fish and it stood on what now is the mobility shop is now and she did make good chips and as for the vicarage i used to climb over the wall and pick blue bells
iknow jhon baily i lived at 6 wilson st platt bridge
Well done maggie and Bernard! Yeah . . . I went to that chippy with a basin every Friday. Always with "scraps" on top. Best chippy in the world! Bibby's pure lard delivered in huge slabs and when cooking, smelt like heaven! And the newsagents was Thomlinson's . . . thought it was Lily Ricketts, though, not May . . .
