Belting pic john, rough winters then pal, could the truck be a bedford by any chance.

Good pic, John. It looks like the wagon is well and truly wedged. Could it have been the winter of 1963? That was my first winter at work it froze solid for about 2 months.
I think the wagon might be a Thames 4D or 6D. Nice to see the old Central Station in the background

Looks like a Ford 4D unit

Does anyone know the building on the left? Would it be the Methodist Chapel?

Comment by: Art on 3rd January 2010 at 00:56

The first building on the left was Christchurch, which also was Wigan Sea Cadet Corps headquarters, "TS Lady Crawford SCC", in the early '50's

Comment by: John Pennington on 3rd January 2010 at 13:11

The building on the left was the Elim Church and the wagon was wedged between the church and Pennington's back gates.

Sorry John, time is a great confuser. The Elim Pentecostal Church was on the bottom right of Stairgate (as you are looking). In fact the chimney behind the lamp post is the boiler house for the church. Looks like "Mr Therm" on the door of the lorry so that would be the Gas Board delivering coke.

Kevin you are the confused one I worked at Pennington's Shop
and the church on the left was definitely the Elim church.
If you want to verify contact the present Elim church.
I cannot tell you what the other church was it always seemed to be unused

John, I’m no stranger to confusion. In fact most of my life is spent in that state.
As a child I used to play around the Station Road/Millgate area and remember boards outside the small chapel welcoming worshipers to the Elim Church. The larger church on the other side of Stairgate was always referred to as the Baptist Church. Is it possible that the Elim moved in later years to the other building? My memories of this area are from the mid to late 50s.
