I seem to recall that there was a sweet shop/tobacconist on the green. Under the shop window was an old metal sign advertising Turf cigarettes.
These buildings are now long gone, replaced by a bank, kebab shop, and KFC
I remember the toffee shop from walking to school, central and rose bridge
The Squirrel, off photo to left, Mortons behind it in Ince Green Lane.. To left of Smithy Green on the corner with Ince Green Lane was Postlethwaite's Butchers and to right of houses in photo, facing Manchester Road, was a Bank, a shop with a "Turf Cigarettes" sign, as previous person points out and a Barber's Shop.
ive skulked past that corner many a day off to rose bridge then off like a shot back to lils cafe before register bell ad finished tingin fera spare n a match
How did they ever get away with building retail shops & banks on what is essentially a village green ? Surely this area would not have been zoned for development it belongs to the community .
