A brilliant photo, Tom. Was Victoria Street near to the Wesleyan Chapel? We only moved to Platt Bridge in 1971 but the chapel was still standing. I am going off the low wall where the people are standing.
Irene - I think the chapel was further up the street. I haven't been to Platt B for yonks but I thought that Victoria St was still there ??
Victoria st is the street after Peel st comming from Wigan. Leads to bowling green just before comunity centre
Yes Irene, Victoria Street was along side the Wesleyan Methodist chapel, the street is still there but there are no houses in it to-day. The photograph was taken from the bottom of Davis Street.
The weslyan chapel stood sat back where the gap is in the houses that the band have just passed
The weslyan chapel was at the top of Peel st not Victoria st
Oh my god.... just look at that!
Victoria Street is actually where the Community Centre is now, it still does lead to bowling greens. The church is actually where the break is in the terraced houses to the right of the photograph.
That is a truly fantastic photograph, I can still remember that shop on the corner, although it was long closed down when I was a lad.
Dennis, did you get the pics I sent to your e-mail? I ask because I haven't a clue what I'm doing!
Yes I did Irene, thanks for those... that last one was a corker!
I have a question for you know... and no, I do know the answer.
We have established that the Weslyian Chapel was further up the road towards the bridge... on the Peel Street junction.
But that low wall where the people and bikes are in the foreground...
What was on that land?
Was the question for me, Dennis, or for Tom? If me, Ihaven't a clue.....please enlighten me.
The Wesleyan Methodist School was on the land where the low wall is. It covered all the area where Platt Bridge Community Centre stands now.
Thank you Margaret, I had no idea, the wall was not there during my formative years. I remember the bus stop was there and behind that was a patch of open land. Before that the bus stop was just next door to the Queens Arms.
I love pictures like this, it does not show much of the village, but it does spark the memories.
As regard the Methodist Church... the front wall still stands today, but houses stand where the church was.
Was the chapel the venue for Miss Fenn's dancing school?
