We used to have one of them when I lived in Petticoat Lane, when you think about it, would the young of today be able to cope with those conditions.
Used to use my Grandmothers in the early 60's at 236 Ormskirk Rd Nr Wigan until she up dated it.Also just remember her mothers in Pemberton. Thinking of building one just to have a recycling area......that works. And some were to hide.Good memories.
I have used that toilet myself in the late 1940s.My dad had a pony and cart and we went to the house to serve the people there, who at that time were Mrs. Dierden and her daughter Mary.There was a pear tree espalliered on the side of the house.
The fence-post to the left of the loo looks like a roller of some kind - from a large mangle, or even a roller-post in a canal bridge-hole.
There were quite a few of those around. From the mills?
