What a brill' shot - great stuff Dennis.
central station platform was still there in the early sixties i was an apprentice plumber working on the new baths and all the sanitary was stored on the platform.
I used to catch the last train from Crankwood Road station to the central then a mad dash to the center of Wigan to catch the last bus to Ashton
Fascinating. Virtually every building in this panaramic view has been demolished.
The line closed in 1964, how long the station buildings remained after that I don't know.
Thinking about it, I might have a pic of the demolition.
Dennis, that is a superb photograph.
Where do you think this picture taken from?
It must have been taken from the Flats ?
That's what puzzles me Alan. I thought those houses in the foreground were removed to make way for the flats!
Nogger, the photo would have been taken from Woodcock House. The area in the foreground is now occupied by Derby House.
Originally there would have been an island platform in the foreground of this pic, don't know when it was removed but i have seen a photo of the station with the platform in place
The station was used by Makinsons builders merchant which was opposite for a while in the 60's but I remember the trains before that.
