Great photo Ron of those vital 2nd World War women armaments workers without who Britain could well have gone down. I wonder how many would answer the call nowadays.

Just had a thought that if it was Warship Week that the women were marching for , it is possible that Beech Hill factory was a naval shell filling factory during the war.and so they would have a link with Warship Week. Not sure on this point though, perhaps somebody might know for sure.

I think it was a week when they tried to raise money to help buy a warship! I think, that the town, bought or paid for, a Spitfire which was named after the town.

You are right about the town buying a Spitfire during the war, a photo of the aircraft was on display, certainly in the late 60's in the small room behind the bar in the Raven Hotel at the top of Wallgate, top being where the Police man stood on point duty.

Hi Ackky, I know where the Raven is<g> That was our starting point when we went around town on Friday night. Not been in for years though.
