A picture showing the King Edward Lodging House in Scholes It was Later turned into a sewing factory and demolished in the 1960's The building, with the workmen stood outside, is the 'Rope and Anchor' Public House. On the other side of the Lodging House was the 'Shovel and Broom'.

This certainly takes me back. The mention of The Shovel and Broom pub. Use to go there in the 1950's. My dad has played the piano there. Also I think one of dad's relatives lived there.

My dad (John Lees, 83, once of Scholes ) was happy to see this photo as no-one would believe him when he said that the sewing factory was a lodging house - it was built by the same firm (Cubby) that built the Royal George, and was owned by the Liverpool Lodging House Co.

If I am not mistaken the sewing factory was Andertons.

They certainly looked after the ‘down and outs’ in those days. I suppose if anyone was caught begging they would be swiftly transported to places like these. I remember this building vividly. There was two or three in the vicinity. Perhaps it’s time to bring lodging houses back ….instead of putting them in ‘hotels’.
