Photographed in the 1960s, the rear of cottages in Darby Lane, in the background, the spire of St John's Methodist Church at the Market Street/Ladies Lane junction. Photo taken from what was the site of one of Hindley's cotton mills and which is now occupied by Tesco.

thank you so much for this pic my g gran was born here in 1969. On her birth certificate it is spelled Derby Lane

they were called step houses as under the steps was a half room where the weaving looms were kept
