I can remember getting on at this station about that time to go to concerts at Kings Hall, Belle vue.
Wow, what memories, Ian. My family and I would go through here in the 1950's for a day out to Southport. The trains would chug into the station under Wallgate...calling at Gathurst....Burscough....and Meols Cop... all aboard.!!
Lets not forget that Wigan Wallgate station is on the Kirby - Manchester Victoria line.
Kirby - Rainford - UpHolland - Orrell - Pemberton - WIGAN WALLGATE - Ince - Hindley - Swinton - Salford - Manchester Victoria.
Does anybody remember little Mick Fish standing just inside the station selling his papers.
First time I remember going on a train it was from Wigan Wallgate to Orrell, would have been about 5 at the time, it was one of the old compartment trains (no corridor) it had a leather strap to wind the windows up and down and tip-up ashtrays fastened to the walls. Orrell station footbridge was still covered over in those days.
Wallgate station before refurbishment, and parked outside are two Hillman Avengers, A Ford Escort British Rail van, two motorcycles, and the white car is a Fiat 124, the car that was later built in Russia as the Lada, albeit with different engines.
