It’s actually Regent St not ‘Greenough St’ but as we know it’s off there.
What a brilliant photo. I thought at first glance it was someone mopping a step until I realised it was the Ordnance Survey man! I love the old gas-lamp in the distance.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
Hence him looking for his Donkey Stone!
Also, it’s a long time since I have seen a tin bin, you wouldn’t put hot ashes in these modern plastic ones.
Thanks Veronica.
Colin, I remember in the late 40s, in addition to the household one, there were council communal tin bins in the street for the collection of food waste such as potato peelings, etc, which were for used for feeding by pig breeders and, possibly other animals
Irene Roberts "thought it was someone mopping a step until she realised it was the Ordnance Survey man".
And I thought it was somebody collecting dog dirts.
Thankyou for your comment, Scotch Egg.
Methinks Scotch Egg has been ‘hatched’ on the Argy Bargy board Irene. ( otherwise the Communication board) It would be ok if the same name was used.
DerekB, we had a pig bin in our communal yard, it stunk to high heaven in the summer and was covered in fly's.
Then we had an outbreak of polio in the area, one neighbours child died. that must have been in the late 50's I think the pig bins vanished not long after
