A view of Wallgate, Wigan, from the railway bridge with the Wheatsheaf pub prominent and St. Joseph's RC Church and Trencherfield Mill in the background in October 1979.

Inside the Wheatsheaf there was a War Memorial to members of the Loyal Victoria Lodge (1329) of the Order of Druids (friendly) Society. It was, sadly, presumably lost when the pub was demolished.
It consisted of a framed illuminated scroll, executed by T Mawdesley of Pemberton. Design: the emblem of the Order of Druids, and each branch of HM Forces represented in a pictorial manner. Names and photographs of all who lost their lives, plus the names of all who served.
Apart from the six servicemen killed, a couple who were killed in a Zeppelin Raid on Wigan on 12 April 1918 may also have been commemorated - the only such commemoration in the town.

Trencherfield Mill and Eckersley Mill chimney, and behind St Joseph's RC church may possibly be Dryden House, one of the three Worsley Mesnes high rise flats, the other two Thackeray and Masefield House. The Ribble Leyland National bus is one of 687-798, SCK687-715P. UHG716-760R. ACW761-765R, CBV766-798S and not earlier 371-460 PTF717-766L. NTC601-640M.

The colour version of Keith's photo is much better in my opinion, although Black and White has a place in Wintery and cold snowy places.
