By 1973 it was no longer possible to drive north through the centre of Wigan as Standishgate became one way, with vehicles now going down Market Street, New Market Street, Mesnes Street, Bridgeman Terrace, Kenyon Road and Mesnes Road to get to Standish.
Nice pic,i remember that road sweeper on town think his name is david, still see him round wigan.
The famous Woollie's railings
The road sweeper lives in goose green retired now he never Had a day off work ,he told me when he retired he got a small silver cup
I remember Wooly's railing as well, Standisher. It also appeared to have rested the wide and the narrow, without altercation from either - Room for another, fettler? Of course, my mate, get thi'sel in, lad.
Rumour had it that when many boys in the Wigan district were born, their proud fathers put their names down for a place on Woollies' railing, much as more affluent parents put their sons names down for Eton, or MCC membership.
The road sweeper is Munch.
Road sweeper is David Marsh fromm Goose Green.
'They' wouldn't have dared remove the rail until all the 'flat-cap' brigade had passed away - bless 'um.
David Marsh went to Highfield School. His nickname was
'Munch'.
Are you sure MrX ? Someone told me tonight it was later than that.
It was definitely a one way system by 1974 because that year I had a short term job driving making deliveries in the town centre.
