one of those shops across rd at the top of cambridge st was polly do-outs
This is ascene I remember very well. Cambridge St straight ahead and Wellington St behind the men with the cobbles.just showing. What year would this be?
What a fantastic photo of a vanished world! Graham, are you the Graham Taylor I knew in my childhood, from George Street in Ince? I hardly dare hope, but hope I am right. I was Irene Griffiths then.
Graham thank you for this photograph ,it. brings back happy memories .
The shop opposite was Mama Gannons, later June's and after that Eileen's,who was the daughter of Mrs Hanley who had a shop in Wellington Street. Poilly do outs was next door going down Cambridge St. The house on the right was Heneseys I think.
Polly-do-out is where I went with my dad's clogs. Carrot red hair and she spat nails. She was the only female clogger I knew and there were quite a few in the vicinity.
On the opposite side of the road still at the top of Cambridge St was the outdoor licence. I think it was Pagetts then -went there many a time with a jug for some ale for my dad!,Must have only been about 8 ! Cannot believe I did that so young ......anyway I was never tempted to drink any of it.
What a fantastic photo, folks sat outside their houses having a chat and just passing the time of day. wonderful.
I ought have said in the earlier comment that the pub where the men are sitting was The Wigan Arms,on the opposite corner to the left was The Prince of Wales.
looks like they are waiting for a game of pitch and toss to start as soon as the Bobby has gone past on his bike
All deep in thought or conversation. No mobile phones or i pads whatever, taking away the moment.
A brilliant photo Graham - such a powerful reminder of the times.
Irene do you have a relation who lived across from the walmsleys pub in spring view, her name was Doreen griffiths, she was in my class at spring view school 1964-1966 Doreen will be about 64to65yo now ,nice girl
I have sat in my stocking feet on a form whilst Polly re- ironed my clogs, matchsticks in the nail holes and all
And wasn't there some comics to read as well AB whilst waiting?? I was just fascinated to watch her with a row of nails between her lips! .It was said that she put clog irons on a balloon!!!!!
IT'S A REAL PRIVALAGE TO SEE THESE WONDERFUL PHOTOS OF GOOD OLD WIGAN BRILLIANT KEEP THEM COMING PLEASE.
It is clearly obvious that it is Sunday morning and these men are waiting for the alehouse to open. This was a typical scene in and around Wigan. Working men having a drink on Sunday lunch/afternoon...
The year is 1961 and the photo was taken on a Thursday afternoon after the 12 till 2:30 pm drinking session the time would be around 2:45/50 pm. The three older gents then went to the Bookies further down Cambridge street on the corner of Hambleton street.
Albert, Doreen is my cousin. She lived in Taylors Lane. She is 64, I would say.....I am 63 and she is slightly older than me. She lives in Spring View, and you are right, she is a lovely person.

Where the two gentlemen on the right are sat down is that where the Silverwell pub is now?
Rich, No the SILVERWELL pub is on Darlington street.
Thanks, Ron.
But I'm still a tad confused regarding this location. Cambridge Street is opposite the Silverwell which is the street in the photo opposite this pub. Where exactly was this pub situated? If it was still standing today where would it be?
Rich I think it was the taken at the Hardybutts end of Cambridge St. see map below
