A reflection of the times is the letter published in Bob Bateman's book "Wigan - A Historical Souvenir" entitled "A gentleman's Complaint" addressed to the "Wigan Mirror" on 15th July 1825. It reads "Sir - through the medium of your Mirror I would wish to call attention of the Borough Constables (or those whose duty it is) to try if they cannot put an end to the trick, now so prevalent among the lower working class, of impudently seating themselves upon the steps of gentlemen's houses. A company of them congregate together, and will scarcely move for you to walk into your house; and not only so, but their conversation, which may be generally overheard, is very opprobrious. Of the truth of this, I doubt not, you will have had ocular demonstration: and should any means be adopted to put a stop to this piece of impudence, I am sure the ladies of Wigan will be very much obliged."
Well done. It fills in the gap as a previous shot of the area had been labelled (on the photo) Next to St Pauls. I spent ages looking at your earlier posting yesterday.
