Photo of Dick Barnes, one time Cinema Manager of the Empire in Wigan, sitting on the steps of Bibby's Clarington Haulage Firm whose offices were situated in Darlington Street East, across the way the Crispin Arms has been largely demolished (1955) to make way for the new building (although the pub remained open all the time building work was in progress) and the lorry is parked in Birkett Street. The "up to date" view from a very similar position I took around 2005.

Dick Barnes was working in the Tool Stores at Gullick Dobson Seaman Way Ince in 1965 when I started as an apprentice. He was a larger than life charachter with a very witty sense of humour,I will never forget his influence and sincerity--a great guy

Andy, I could not agree more with your assessment of Dick. Although I was only a young teenager at the time I sensed immediately how nice a man he was, my father counted him as one of his friends. He was a customer at the Crispin, the whole family liked him.
