Here are some of those "border crossers" having enjoyed their extra half an hour of "leisure time" in the Crispin Arms. Photo dates from around 1951 or so, names that come to mind are Jimmy Priest, Bob Reynolds, Tommy Banks, some surnames Gannon (Jim?), Benson (Bill?), Burgess (Bill?).

Bloody drunkards...Hic!

Comment by: Keith on 1st November 2012 at 10:13

Drinkers? Yes. Hard working, honest men - of course. Men who have had life experiences, a few through two world wars. Some no doubt enduring hardships we could not even comprehend today. As my father often said, they were “the salt of the earth”.

A really silly comment by the site buffoon Keith.
Another great picture,thank you.

Bill f, I appreciate your posting, thank you.

Comment by: Jarvo on 1st November 2012 at 20:25

Bill f...How dare you! Who the hell do you think YOU are? I don't see many postings from you on here...Didn't you get the tone of the message...It was tongue in cheek, you utter philistine...

Comment by: Bill f on 1st November 2012 at 23:19

You don't do tongue in cheek with people who are serious posters and take the time to help people find their past by posting pictures like this jarvo!
It just indicates your complete lack of manners towards posters like Keith, and to the relatives of the people in the picture!

Comment by: Bill f on 1st November 2012 at 23:33

Jarvo,
I omitted to say that I appreciate the time and effort involved in posting such pictures,a complete part of the culture and way of life in Ince and the reason I don't post much is that I am quite happy to peruse and be happy to look at the pictures posted without having to make trivial comments ,and I don't get lyrical and orgasmic at a picture of a steam engine even though I travelled on them to school and work in my early years and was to be honest sick of them ,they were so dirty!
Every one to their own choices eh!

Comment by: Jarvo on 2nd November 2012 at 15:20

Bill f: Trivial comments? The site buffoon? I think you should apologise for that unnecessary comment. You know very little about me so I wouldn't mind if you'd keep your "opinions" to yourself. Each to his own, indeed...

I think its a cracking photo of a pub and its regulars
Ive had many a pint in there myself
Pint of bitter split with a brown peter
Excellent drink and really takes me back to the times i used to go in there
I'm sure the people in the picture will invoke memories of past times, it certainly has with me

Comment by: Keith on 2nd November 2012 at 19:30

Tommy, as irrepressible as ever, is in the middle of the back row, with smile, flat cap and watch chain. a lovely gentleman.

Comment by: Jarvo on 2nd November 2012 at 20:09

Seems like I touched on a raw nerve there. Just looked at Keith on another photograph posing by his Dad's car...A car in 1952 indicated that you were from a well to do or wealthy family; not many "salt of the earth" men from Ince could bloody afford one. A pair of stout shoes for any child was a bonus...Not many "rags" on show in the Crispin yard on that sunny day... As for owning an haulage company? Well, that would have put you in the Wigan Lane bracket...I hate it when folk talk of "hard times" and "life experiences" when they, or their relations never had such times. I hate hypocrisy and condescension at most levels...I detest it in the working class...

We know nothing about you Jarvo? We do now! Never judge a book by its cover.

Comment by: Benjamin on 3rd November 2012 at 16:16

Jarvis ruins most threads with his childish posts

Comment by: Jarvo on 3rd November 2012 at 17:44

You should read some of my stuff, Benjy...I always make "valid" comments; and I normally try to keep it lighthearted...Jesus! Lighten up.

Comment by: irene roberts on 3rd November 2012 at 19:20

I rarely join in with these arguments but I truly feel Jarvo put the comment in as a light-hearted joke. He is not a nasty person and I think it has just been mis-judged, both on Jarvo's part, who hadn't realised it might be taken literally, and on the reader's part who took it seriously.....a misunderstanding all round. Shake hands, Gentlemen....life's too short.

Comment by: Benjamin on 3rd November 2012 at 19:27

Jarvo, you missed the tone of my message, it was also tongue in cheek. See how things can be taken in the wrong context. Maybe you should take a leaf out of your own book and lighten up a bit.

Comment by: Jim on 3rd November 2012 at 19:52

How can anyone take you light heartedly Jarvo when you presume so much about a family of whom you know nothing. Ignorance is no excuse, and ill informed, prejudicial comments show you in a very poor light.

Comment by: Jarvo on 4th November 2012 at 00:25

Thank you, Irene...A true Lady of WW...
Jim: Enlighten me then...?

Comment by: Ste Mul on 4th November 2012 at 20:47

So was Wigan opening hours half hour later than Ince?
I never realised that they were different!

Comment by: Graham on 13th November 2012 at 13:59

Jarvo, you wouldn't have dared say those comments to Keith's dad who was the Landlord of the Crispin. He played for Wigan RLFC and would have wiped the floor with you. Your ignorant comments are not welcome on here thanks.
