Just to continue the Crispin theme, here in 1952, rather self-consciously posed for the camera by my father, is myself and to the right my fellow class mate at St Catharines, Harold Bibby whose father ran Clarington Haulage. The car was a 1938 Hillman Minx, already about 14 years old but we were very glad to have it, in those days it was difficult to get a car, there was a considerable waiting list. The street in the background is Birkett Street and the pub is to the right, we are in what used to be the Stables area, used no doubt from around the 1880's when the pub was first built. It used to be a Sumner's pub (Haigh Brewery) until Greenall's bought it and others, in around 1930. Harold Sumner, Gent., used to live at Ashfield House, Standish in the 1920’s.

Hi Roy, in a word no. Donald was Harold's first cousin.
Harold had two other brothers who were older, Norman and Walter, all three went to the Grammar School and their father was Norman Bibby.
Arthur was Norman's brother and helped him run Clarington Haulage and Donald was his son, in other words Donald was the son of Harold's uncle Arthur. I think that’s how it’s explained.

Hi Keith, the car has a welch reg mark ath.Was it bought in Wales by your Dad,Jack Bowen?

Quite right Tom. He had the car in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire and when he signed for Wigan in 1938 but left it for the family to use in Wales. However after taking over at the Crispin he brought it back to Wigan in 1950. It has fond memories and I can still remember using its starting handle.

Hi there everyone! Donald bibby was my dad and died 20 years ago. In currently trying to find out about him and his family and my dad never introduced me to them, so any info or pictures would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Catherine.
