After the shafts where sunk to their final depth of 885 yards the 2 shafts where joined together by the means of a small diameter tunnel

When this tunnel was complete, there was an airlock installed and 4 electric fans fitted to it, with 2 c.a. fans as a backup. I was one of the deputies that had to be on site for the whole shift. My other 2 mates were Ronnie Adamson and Frank Atherton.We were "loose and tie" and if one didn't turn up the others had a 12 hour shift to do. The noise of the fans was incessant and you couldn't get away from them. It's no wonder that I suffer from tinnitus now!!
