It was standard procedure at every coal mine to search staff going underground,it was a very serious offence to be caught with any contraband
and usually led to instant dissmisal and in extreme cases prosecution.Cigarettes and matches where taboo,Aluminium foil and any other combustable materials where also frowned upon, the reason being, methane gas was in abundance underground and in the event of a naked flame or hot spark the consequences do not bear thinking about. In this view the later 3 chain kibble referred to by Fred Foster in a previous comment can clearly be seen.

Is that billy Ablitt doing the search on No 1 Shaft
Billy was a "one off" He would work all through the Christmas holiday, so that he could take more time off to see his relatives down South. I think that he came from Kent originally. When he had visitors on the bank ready to go down pit, he would say "shall we have a word of prayer before you get in the cage?" That really gave them a fright!!
