The hoppit used to remove spoil was also used to transport men down the shafts. Here we see 3 men being lowered down the shaft.

this kibble was discontinued after the accident when a load of spoil was tipped back down the shaft. The side clips slipped and the load discharged. The kibbles were replaced by ones with 3 stride chains.
The man on the right hand side of the hoppit is Roy Lythgoe the surveyor. He was there from the beginning of the operation and was credited with the invention of the piano wire plumb lines that were used to keep the shafts vertical.
