In this view of the disused No1 pit bottom it can be seen that the upper gantry and steps to it have long since been removed.This horizon would only be visited very rarely to carry out general inspections.If you could stand in this position now the structure would be obliterated by the shaft infill material which would have flushed into the mouthing sealing the workings off.

this was the first glimpse that I had of underground at parkside when I started there in sept 1959. The sinkers were putting up the roof girders in the inset. I had started there from Park Colls along with Frank Bourhill and Ronnie adamson. Joe Corday, the training officer took us down in a hoppit to see the job in progress. It was frightening to us to see no supports except for roof bolts.
