This view in the Wigan 4 feet workings is looking back up brow towards the Wigan mines access. The double warrick can be seen replacing the earlier single girder type.Sadly 2 men lost their lives in the Wigan mines access tunnel when a runaway minecar went careering out of control down the roadway and the broader 2 gider system was employed to try and stop the same thing happening again.

Graham, These are stunning photos of a forgotten era. Do you have anymore?

Hi,yes i have well over 2000 pictures taken underground at Parkside, some colour and some B&W,eventually i hope to get about 85 percent on to the website, the other 15 percent will not be published due to the nature of the material. All i ask is that everyone remain patient and i will get the job done as soon as possible.

In our training we were shown gory pics of the consequences of not following safety procedures... were you unfortunate enough to have to record such real-life incidents?

The 2 men killed were Arnold Nicholson ATC foreman and Steve Stubbs a British coal workman. I went to Arnold's funeral at Rose Bridge Methodist Chapel, it was a very emotive occasion, attended by many of Arnold's friends and workmates.
