Coming from Ince, I remember T.E. Gallagher's well, but we never called it that ....it was "Teg's Pickles" to us Incers. The vinegar smell could be overpowering at times but not as bad as the smell from the tripe works! Smells from various workplaces was just a part of life back then. My brother, 19 years my senior, used to go to the "Penny Rush" on Saturdays at The Doric Cinema in Ince, (known as "The Bug" for reasons we won't dwell on!), and the kids could get in for a penny and a jam-jar. The proprietor, a Mr. Pennington, (known to one and all as "Owd Penny"), used to sell the jam-jars to Teg's Pickles.....recycling isn't a modern thing!
Yes Irene,I remember TEG's pickle factory well, the vinegar smell. As you say though,it was much more bearable than the horrible smell from the tripe works in Pennington Lane.Still have great memories though of growing up in Ince back then.
