Those pits like John Pit and others have many memories for a much older generation around Standish, Standish Lower Ground and Shevington many of which have been passed onto to our generation who were fortunate not have had to 'go down't pit'. Dangerous, dirty hard work for many brave, proud men and pit brow lassies.
