A similar image is already in the Album - but this its a wider view. The pit on the right is the Bye Pit, sunk in 1815. The large iron lattice work headframes were the first seen in Lancashire.

Good photo Rev. David. According to the map, we have Queen pit on the left, King pit, Prince pit and as you say Bye pit on the right. Lady Lane runs across behind Prince pit. Bye pit is on the early map 1845 with Engine pit and only one railway line.

Employment for thousands from 14 upwards, unfortunately not many workers benefited from their employment. Ill health and early death was common, hopefully we won't see this ever again.

Seeing the photo really reminded me of my school trek to Highfield Jns&Sec Mod ,i cannot believe i along with my mates walked over there all our school days . Brill Photo!
