Had the pleasure of talking to Jimmy last year after not seeing him since the day he retired, he was still the same whitty character i remembered at work. Had loads of laughs with him amd what a brilliant driver to work with. Pure class with that St Helens humour.
On a returning Football Special from Carlisle and Liverpool, yes Carlisle were in Div 1 for a year, a scouser pulled the communication chord on Shap Summit......Jimmy walked through the train with a locomotive brake handle in his hand threatening them should anybody do it again 'cos it was Saturday night and he'd promised to take the wife out.............Everybody backed off until a young kid said "Will you drop us off at Huyton mister ?"..........."Any more trouble and I'll throw you all out here !!!!!"..........Result, a very quiet train and he did stop at all the stations from Huyton to Lime Street.......A great bloke !
does anyone remember a Bill Leyland from StHelens?he was a driver but not sure if he was wigan or Liverpool based.I lived a few doors down from him.
