The number of records, which I still have, bought from that stall. One of my LP's still has the price sticker on 17s 6d.
I bought my first LP from here probably early 1960's 'GENE PITNEY'S BIGGEST HITS' Still got it
I like Pitney's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Ron - It's got a good 'Cowie' rumble to it.
I like Liberty Valance too. Did Roy also own the outside stall where you could buy ex-jukebox records? Or was that someone else? You had to have a little round gizmo to put in the centre of the record in order to play it on your record-player.
Irene - the outside stall was owned by someone else. Spent many lunchtimes rummaging through his stock, in the 1970s!
That appliance the shopper is looking at reminds me of my mam's first washer. Heated by gas and it had to be filled by hand with buckets of water(my job again!). I don't know anybody who had a washer like that... It replaced the 'dolly tub' and before that there was a brick boiler in the corner of the kitchen. That was taken out by my dad leaving a space for a chair!!
Then he made some shelves higher up for cups and plates and such. All very charming - Not! Then I recall a table was placed there for when I got a Dansette record player. When the needle needed replacing I would put a piece of soap on the arm so it would play a bit better!
February 1966, that was a boom time for TV shops. Everybody wanted the new 625 line sets to receive BBC2.
Yes Philip that's a favourite of mine too. A bit FRANKIE LAINEish like "GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY"
Strange: I don't remember this shop at all. Grey cells must be disappearing faster than I thought.
I still got the pink stripped bag with roy hursy wrote on it that the single record got put in
How wonderful, Tommy!
I once considered buying 'Yellow River' by Christie from here. I didn't, of course. And I have never regretted it. :)
Bought it, Jarvo, Bought it. C'mon shipmate, it's a belter! And what a year 1970 had turned out to be; Brazil winning the World Cup in majestic fashion, Nijinsky becoming the first horse in 35years to complete 'Racing's Triple Crown . . . .
I remember Roy very well.
I remember buying my first single from here " cant remember what it was" but bought many more after, I worked on with Mrs Peacock on the aberdashrey stall next door in the early 60s
I remember his stall very well and bought many records from Roy on a Saturday. He was very obliging and if he did not have your choice in stock he would order it. I remember him getting me the theme tune to The Avengers which was popular on TV at the time.
Think he contracted Malaria on a holiday abroad which he recovered from but a few years later it flared up again and he sadly passed away. His memory lives on.
I bought my first LP from there in 1964 'GENE PITNEY'S BIG 16' Still got it And it's still in MINT condition..
