Keith, I remember seeing , I'm sure on WW, a pic of Garswood Hall, of Pit Brow Lasses, one of them a 'Lomax'.. Have you seen it ?.. I've looked, but couldn't find it..I'll have to look again when I have more time...

Huge smiles, but these lasses grinded like hell ! It was what you ‘had’ to do in those days , now , it’s what you ‘choose ‘ to do . Women like this gave us , put that on your iPhone! We owe! God bless you !,
Salt of the Earth. Worked with the pit brow ladies at the Maypole 1949-50, before going to Low Hall, for under ground training.
Sorry, but I find nothing heroic about photographs of these poor women. What a life they must have had. At the pit head in all weathers dressed in those dreadful shawls and clogs. Thank God those days are well behind us even though they made the best of it. Women today wouldn't put up with the drudgery that those poor girls must have endured...
My man was a Pit Brow lass. She loved it. She was Margaret Markland who at that time lived in Ince, she travelled to Platt Bridge to her Pit. She wanted to return but due to having 2 children after her wedding she wasn't able.
