Finch Coaches depot, Moat House Street, Ince, in
the late 1970s.
All set to Rochdale mills at 4.30am 1960s, the old road before the M62. Bolton, Bury, Haywood and then Rochdale. Quite a journey in the dark.
I seem to remember in the fifties my mother going to Rochdale for the early evening shift after my dad came home from work. I wonder how long the journey took from Scholes in those coaches. I don't think she did it for very long though.
Veronica...The journey from Wigan to Rochdale would have taken about 40 minutes on the old road via Bolton, Bury,
and on to Rochdale. It can take just as long nowadays on
the M61, M60, & A627M, depending on the time of day.
I did a bit of occasional part time work for Fred Finch and
his son Raymond in the mid 1970s, Stag & Hen Nights to Blackpool, York Races, Fishing Trips etc. This Bedford coach
was no slouch, it could romp up to 70mph, no problem.
Wigan world doesnt work,if it doesnt aggree with an honest opinion it will not show it.
I also travelled to the ROF at Chorley in the mid sixties early seventies but can't remember the coach firm Ray. The coaches looked very similar to that one though - mind you I always fell asleep going! ( it would be 6 15 near McCurdy's in Scholes.)
Judging by the faded paintwork, this picture is probably from the early 1980s. I drove it several times around 1977
at the time that Raymond Finch bought it, when it looked
brand new, having just arrived from the paint shop. Ray.
