This doorway and Woolies corner where the places to meet your girlfriends. I can still feel that thrill you got, as she got off the bus or walked around the corner. looking like a million dollars.

Now that's what I call proper shopping and how Wigan town has changed for the worst.

I don't remember why the store was demolished....there must have been a 'story' behind it. The buildings now in its place are modern and practical but 'soulless'! Yet an old building still exists at the far end. Not having lived in Wigan for many years it would be nice to know.

It always reminded me of Grace Brothers in Are You Being Served?. The carpeted floors and creaky stairs. A friend of mine worked there as a young man and tells me there was a ghost, and I believe staff who work in the bank that now occupies the site have seen her.

Is there a modern day, usual rendezvous, in Wigan, where couples meet up, or is that now part of a bygone age?.

Albert, I'm afraid making dates is indeed part of a bygone age; nowadays you just turn out and pick something up!

I suppose now A.W. all the young Valentinoes are mobile, and collect their dates. All we had was a bus ride, or shank's pony.

I suppose King St is the place to be 'picked up' literally! A few years ago I had to walk down King St at night after a trip to Edinburgh on the train...my car was parked in Hardybutts. There were girls actually sat in the middle of the road. Everything was on show -that was the last and only time I have ever walked down there for years and years. I recall walking home many times in the sixties and feeling quite safe...not now it would seem.

A long time ago, gangs of good natured lads, and lassies would parade down Library Street, and then up King Street, or vice versa, after the cinemas had loosened. especially at week ends. It was a regular occurrence. There was never any trouble, Even before I joined Wigan Borough, Wigan was well policed then, with enough bobbies on the beat to counteract any potential trouble.

Spud, not quite up to your 48 years, we are up to 43. Not bad for a blind date, but now my eyes are really going. Lol.Sorry Luv.

Spud & Erwick. A lot of couples don't really allow the ink to dry on their wedding licence, before jumping ship. It would seem that a number of celebrities, enjoy the taste of wedding cake.

Used to meet friends there in the 60 ‘s , then go in the cafe for a drink. Happy days
