I have no idea how my parents had got this booklet, whether it was given to customers who had an account with them, or was available in store. My parents lived in Swinley Street bringing up 2 young girls and used Lowe's frequently along with other stores at that time.I cannot remember when the store finally closed (I was married then and had moved from Wigan)
Mrs Bethel still worked at Lowes untill it was taken over by Greenwoods in1963 clocking up more than 60yrs, she was fashion buyer up to her retirement. It sounds impossible that a woman in her 80s was in charge of fashion ! She was a very nice person ,she lived in Barn Lane Golborne. Miss Brogan (Mrs Sutton) was in charge of the ground floor at the takeover,
she lived in Old Hall Drive Ahton in Makerfield.
The "Children and Maids' Department"!.....how fascinating! As well as working at Debenhams, I later worked at Boot's for 16 years; I have the 1940s film Brief Encounter, and one scene is set in Boot's Chemists, and there is a sign saying "Surgical and Nursery Requisites"....by the time I worked there, (1992), the department was called, simply, "Baby". How things change!
I've just bethought myself , just for accuracy Mrs Bethel lived on Harvey Lane I always mix the two lanes up.
Miss Hibbert was also the Sunday School Superintendent at St. Thomas' Church Caroline St. Wigan for many years. I know that she was still working at Lowes in 1965 when I got married. She was born in 1907 she was a lovely lady. Lovely memories of her at Sunday School I have a photo of her with all the children at a Christmas Party but when I have tried to put it on Wigan World it doesn't work for some reason.

Ann Melling did by any chance know Miss Hibberts first name
