This was done in the very early days of Web offset newspaper production when consumables were still under developments. In January 1966, The chairman's wife of United Newspapers pushed a button and the old letterpress give way to a new Crabtree web offset machine the first of its type in the paper's new works.
Colour pictures started to appear and awards after awards started to flood in the offices at Woods Street. By November of that year, they won everything in the Newspaper game. The Wigan Observer was only the 3rd in the Country to embark on the unknown newspaper production and it was a success.

The first colour pictures rolled off the new press on the 24th August 1966, a newspaper revolution at that time. The printers, camera room staff and all the production team were Pioneers in web offset technology. Remember this was 1966, most other newspapers including the nationals only made this bold step from letterpress to web offset principle, in the mid 1980s-1990s.

In 1967, we had our wedding photo with many others printed in the Wigan Observer at Wigan register office. It was crystal clear the print quality, just like today, but that was 49 years ago.
